Planning Commissioner Neil Derry today announced his candidacy for the 4th Ward City Council seat held by retiring San Bernardino Councilman Frank Schnetz.
"I want to serve the people of the 4th Ward because I offer the commitment and experience to successfully meet the challenges that affect our quality of life," said Derry.
"My background as a City Planning Commissioner, Assistant to the County Treasurer, Field Representative for State Assemblyman Fred Aguiar, business executive and United States Marine Corps veteran gives me the leadership skills to make a real difference at City Hall," continued Derry.
Derry sees his major priorities on the Council as: 1) responsibly reducing the excessive utility taxes being paid by local residents; 2) ensuring a high level of neighborhood police and fire protection; 3) expanding economic development opportunities and bringing quality new jobs to the city; and, 4) establishing a less confrontational, more cooperative political climate at City Hall.
"As our next Councilman, I'll insist on the strongest standards of financial accountability to give city taxpayers the highest level of services for their money," stated Derry.
Derry's candidacy received the strong support from 4th Ward community leaders including Councilman Frank Schnetz and former Councilman David Oberhelman.
"Neil Derry is an outstanding choice to represent us at City Hall," declared Schnetz, who is stepping down as Councilman from the 4th Ward. "His experience and dedication will be a great asset to our community."
"I am proud to support Neil Derry for City Council. He is a proven problem solver who will bring people together and build consensus on the issues facing our city," said former Councilman Oberhelman.
A resident of the 4th Ward for 27 years, Neil Derry attended local schools, including Belvedere Elementary, Serrano Jr. High and San Gorgonio High School. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1987 and served two overseas tours including Operation Desert Storm. He earned his degree in Political Science from California State University, San Bernardino. He is married.
From 1993 to 1998, Neil worked for State Assemblyman Fred Aguiar. He currently serves as a Project Administrator in the San Bernardino County Treasurer's office.
